Mistral Vibe vs ChatGPT: Best AI Assistant for Europe?
On this page

For many people in Europe, the choice of AI assistant is no longer just about which one is smartest. Where your data lives, what it costs in euros and whether it shows ads matter too. That's why Mistral Vibe, the French alternative formerly called Le Chat, keeps coming up as the European answer to ChatGPT.

Here's how Mistral Vibe and ChatGPT compare on price, privacy, models and features, and which one fits you best. Prices are in euros where available and were checked on 3 November 2026.

Quick answer

Choose ChatGPT if you want the most capable all-round assistant (images, video, agents, GPT-6). Choose Mistral Vibe if you want a cheaper, ad-free assistant made in Europe that stores your data in the EU by default, with strong coding tools included in Pro.

What is Mistral Vibe?

Mistral Vibe is the AI assistant from Mistral AI, a Paris-based company founded in 2023 and now valued at well over €20 billion, the highest of any European AI company. The assistant launched as Le Chat in February 2024 and was renamed Vibe at the end of May 2026, adding agents for work and coding. In October 2026 Mistral released Mistral Large 4, an open-weight model with 1 trillion parameters.

Pricing in Europe

Mistral Vibe keeps it simple: Free, Pro at €14.99/month (about 6× the free message limit, more web searches and image generations, all-day coding in the CLI, IDE or web and $15 of monthly API credits), Team at $24.99 per user/month with up to 30 GB storage per user, and custom Enterprise plans that can even be self-hosted. Verified students pay $5.99/month for up to 12 months.

ChatGPT costs more in Europe once VAT is added: German users report about €8/month for Go and €23/month for Plus, with Pro around €229/month. Prices vary with each country's VAT rate (19% in Germany, 20% in France, 21% in Spain, 22% in Italy).

Save money

Mistral Pro is roughly €8 a month cheaper than ChatGPT Plus in most of the EU. If you mostly write, summarise and code, try Vibe's free plan for a week before paying for either.

Privacy, GDPR and where your data lives

This is where Mistral has the clearest advantage for European users:

  • Mistral: your data is hosted in the European Union by default; it is only stored in the US if you explicitly use Mistral's US API endpoint. Mistral is building new data centres near Paris and in Sweden. You can opt out of model training, and Enterprise customers can deploy Vibe on their own servers.
  • ChatGPT: consumer plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) run on OpenAI's standard, mainly US-based infrastructure. EU data residency is available, but only for ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu and API customers. Free and Go also show ads, which can use your conversations unless you change your settings (see how to turn off ChatGPT ads).

Both companies operate under GDPR in the EU, and both must follow the EU AI Act's transparency rules (see our EU AI Act 2026 guide).
